Very, very cool. But the ultimate album version is so perfect.
That skittering guitar line (aping Tommy Hall's electric jug) at the beginning is a signifier of their love of the old music of 13th floor elevators. They even regularly covered the 'vators' "Fire Engine".
That was awesome. Best band ever...
God i love Roxy Music!
Good to hear Davey O lists guitar
I prefer this version to that on the first album which is all but ruined by Manzanera's discordant guitar.
Sonic substantiation of the phrase "a work in progress"
This is remarkable. Andy's sax playing is magical. Manzera's guitar is the missing piece.
As Punk as it gets!
no metrnome just eno
Ferry was at his best when he was adding to the weird theatrical ambiance of the music. The more he tried to be completely up front and singing like a crooner, the less I liked him and the resulting music Hits like Avalon can't hold a candle to this. Sure, the later stuff was hugely successful, but the early music changed what you could expect from music.
You mean Emo, right?
You are joking, right?
It’s good to hear the skeletal framework of a song, before all the bells and whistles.
That version of Love Comes In Spurts is weaker than the final one, with a completely different music dating from the Heartbreakers era (One-Track Mind) and hotly spirited by the lineup of the Voidoids.
“The first guitar I ever bought,” Phil Manzanera tells me, “was a red Hofner Galaxie. I was sort of living in South America, and I bought it on credit from the Bell’s shop in Surbiton [south London]. I played it right up until I joined Roxy Music.”
I love this woman so much. Fearless
I like my meat raw
Patti is so special. I heard horses when i was 10, and i was hypnotized by it. And when "just kids" came out i immediately read the whole book in one weekend. And now hearing this.. how have I never googled it before?! Insanity.
She has such a sweet young voice in this appearance.
So outside the norm. Makes u wonder what made this girl. How was she brought up. Who knew what shed become, except her. Ita a long way from a bookstore job!
Absolutely fantastic❤. One of rocknrolls best songs ever!! I kind of like that nonchalant sax solo after the First vers. Obviously the core to the classic track is already here. But glad they developed it to perfection. More of everything.
How can I ever thank you for uploading this, the version (or closer to it than the studio release) that I remember from my local college station (WTUL New Orleans) who had it on heavy rotation 1970 or 71, 72, 73... (lot a kids lonely for Boston at Tulane, probably someone's bootleg), the one I quoted a passage of in reply to my new endodontist today (who asked me what is that from, and when I told her what their significance was to all punk even somewhat rap, handed my a card with a QR code to leave a Google review for their office "I like your personality.") "I'm in love with the modern world...drivin past the Stop n Shop with the radio on" is as bittersweet now as it was then in the first flower of the environmental, anti-big-powers-bombing-the-crap-outta-little-guys-war, pro-human rights movements. Because [certain people who shall remain nameless] have made it their lifes' work to roll us back, however long it took, to the supposed halcyon days before civil rights, feminism, etc---too much of the time with the paid off co-operation of our "left." Sigh. Hey at least Biden finally realized in his dotage where his loyalties should lie, or he's finally in a position to have a say in what Dems do. Who knew when we compromised in '20? Equality & workers' rights, y'all ! Zat too much to ask?
This owes a debt to the velvets but there’s a proto motorik pulse and joy that has nothing to do with the darkness of the VU
@billywyman
fuck it
does anyone have fan audio or video recording from this period?
Quite the experience reading this section of the book then finding the actual live performance. The triumphs ahead of her shine through this bravura performance. Thanks so much for sharing.
duck and sally inside
Fucking love this version .. never heard this demo before :)
Is that Ferry on piano at 6:52?
Why is Andy holding Phil's guitar??? And that green suit ... lol and 🤮.
Faaark. This was crazy 😅. They certainly polished it up before the final mix on Album 1.
She was still quite young and she just let her words flow with all the innocence of youth....she was young enough to not second guess what she was doing, not editing herself a lot, so her true talent was shining through....raw and true.
Innocence. Doesn't exist any more.
What record is this version on?
Fantastic ! Hadn't heard this early demo before. A truly achetypal wistful Ferry idea with lovely hypnotic rhythm in the finished article of course and here we witness Mackay's haunting sax evolving. It was the icing on the cake for me.
This version really show's Jonathan's obsession with early Lou Reed.
He slept on Lou's couch many a time and was hanging out with The Velvets as a teen. That must have been something else.
Yeah
What a joy! Andy seems to dominate this version, so interesting how they streamlined their sound into the magnificence of those first 3 albums. Thanks for posting.
Literally, the day I was born ❤️
This sounds more Terry Riley than anything. The intro I mean, and what goes on in the middle. I hear traces of Family circa "Music In a Dolls House" too in the brass elsewhere on this demo tape. I love the bedroom quality of the recording. The murky long delay stuff Eno did with Mackay can be heard on "Time Regained" on the second issue of "In Search of Eddie Riff." I was instantly reminded of it.
Who else is so girly and grown up, so fragile and tough, so male and fe-male, so street-wise and innocent, so solitary and yet so sought after.
BF’s iconic voice & lyrics with retro-futurist references plus Roxy Music in embryonic, genre-bending portmanteau form. Much needed archive format, many thanks for posting. Over half a century ago now, that too, like these post-pop surrealist musical pioneers is weird beyond words. All power to lovers of Roxy Music & their multifarious, marvellously joyously kaleidoscopic spin-offs. Life affirming & enriching through six decades, just WOW! PS; If anyone has heard Andy McKay tell of his saxophonic / woodwind influences please add comments. Thnx.
The addition of Paul Thompson radically changed EVERYTHING!
WOW WOW what a gem
Bryan Ferry’s vocal are about the only element that has any resemblance to the track as released titled Ladytron on the groundbreaking first album. The absence of Phil Manzanera’s rapier guitar & Paul Thompson’s juggernaut drumming gives the demo a looser, softer edged, less solid, unpremeditated extemporised vibe. The sheer scale of imagination & the willingness to embrace experimental approaches to pop / rock is there in abundance on the demo. Truly fascinating . This in 1971! Over half a century ago. The same year as the UK went over to decimal currency. The old was making way for the new for sure. Many thanks for sharing this, good vibes.

OMG ! Never thought I'd ever hear this again.
